How To Troubleshoot Your Genie Garage Door Opener

Garage Door Installation Repair Service |

If you’re having trouble with your Genie garage door opener, you may feel frustrated and wonder how to resolve this problem as quickly as possible. Genie is one of the leading manufacturers in the world and has mastered the art of manufacturing garage door openers that are easy to use and troubleshoot.

Some of the common problems with Genie garage door openers include:

Garage Door Won’t Move

The red emergency release cord could be disconnected if the garage door doesn’t move when you press the garage opener. This red cord hangs from the trolley on the garage door. When disconnected, it triggers the manual setting so the garage door can be opened without using the opener. If this is the case, simply snap the cord back in place by pulling the cord towards the opener.

Garage Door Reverses After Hitting Floor

The garage door opener has a limit setting that controls how far the door opens and closes before it stops. When the limit setting has been programmed beyond the point where the garage door touches the floor, the opener will assume that the door has hit some object and will reverse automatically. Check your user manual on how to adjust the limits set for your Genie model.

Garage Door Won’t Open or Close

If your Genie opener is not working at all, there are several possibilities to consider. The sensors could be the problem. If this is the case, you will see small red lights flashing, indicating that something is obstructing the path of the sensors. Other possibilities are that the photo lenses need to be cleaned, the sensors are not aligned properly or there is a wiring issue with the sensors – which will need to be addressed by a professional.

Make sure you check whether the power source is on and that the opener is plugged into an outlet that works. Check your breakers to make sure that none of them have tripped.

Garage Door Opens and Closes by Itself

If you see this happening, it’s likely due to a short circuit within your garage door system. The most likely area is in your transmitters or controls. To find out which transmitter is faulty, remove the batteries from each one and try operating the garage door. Once you’ve discovered which one is the problem, do not put the batteries back in until you have had the transmitter replaced or repaired.

Remote Control Not Working

Dead Transmitter Batteries

For your garage door to work, the transmitter needs to be connected to a power source. However, if the batteries are low or dead, the transmitter won’t work. Ensure that the transmitter is opening the garage door when you push it. If it is, that means all you need to do is place new batteries in the transmitter. If you have multiple garage door transmitters, the others may also need new batteries.

Photographic Eye Not Aligned

The photographic eyes are a safety feature that transmits an unseen beam between them that detects whether anything is obstructing the garage door as it closes. If the garage door opens but doesn’t close, check the photographic eyes to ensure that they are aligned.

Transmitter Issues

Many things can go wrong with your transmitters that can cause your garage door not to work. One of the leading causes is that you may be out of range when you’re trying to open your garage door. Garage door transmitters are programmed to work within a specific range, so make sure that you’re close enough to your home when you press the transmitter. If this still does not open the garage door, check to see that the antenna on your garage motor is not blocked.

Door Path is Blocked

The reverse mechanism on your garage door is there to make sure that the garage door does not collide with anything in its path. This could be people or an object. If something is blocking the path of your garage door, it will partially close and the reverse mechanism will kick in and cause the garage door to lift again. Check to make sure that there aren’t any items in the way. Keep in mind that smaller objects like debris accumulating on the rails or stones can block the path.
