If the keypad for your garage door is not working, here are 8 reasons why you’re most likely facing issues:

Low or Dead Battery

Perhaps you’ve got a garage door keypad battery problem. The first thing you should do when you come across a garage door keyboard that seems to be on the fritz is to check the batteries. This may seem silly, but those little guys don’t last forever.

When was the last time you replaced your garage door keypad battery? If the garage door keypad lights up when you press buttons, then the battery is not at the root of the problem, and it’s safe to say the reason for the error is elsewhere.

Loose, Fray, or Damaged Wires

If you’ve ruled out any battery issues, you should check to see if the wire is connected as it should be. This also makes for a good time to inspect for any damaged or frayed wires.

You will have to remove the back cover of the keypad to access the wiring. Inspect each key to ensure the wires are properly connected. If any are detached, reconnect them and try to open your garage door.

Dirt Causing Stuck Keys

It isn’t unheard of for dust and dirt to build up in the space between the keys in the keypad. This may certainly be a reason why you’re having issues opening your garage door because if the keys are stuck, you can enter your passcode all you want, but the opener will not respond.

You can correct this though with a thorough cleaning using a clean cloth. Make sure you really get into the area between the buttons. You can even consider using compressed air to blast away any particulates that have gathered in the keypad.

Expired or Wrong Pin

A malfunctioning security code – whether it’s expired or you’re simply entering the wrong pin – could be the source of your problems. Some models make you reprogram your keypad each time you swap out the batteries. The first thing you should do when you think you have a code problem is to reprogram the keypad.

Consult the user manual as programming can differ slightly between models. If you don’t have the manual you can usually just push the learn button, wait for for a little, then enter a new code entirely. If you have to reboot the entire system, you can achieve this by powering off the garage opener and unplugging it for about five minutes. When you plug it back into a power source you should be able to enter a fresh code.

Incompatible or Old Keypad

If your keypad is getting up there in age, it might be time for a new one. These guys are left out exposed to the elements and certainly don’t last forever. The typical keypad will service you for about a decade.

When you replace your keypad you have to ensure that you select one that is compatible with your garage door.

No Longer Within Range or Poor Connection

Keypads have a limited range in which they can be used to open your garage door. You need to be within no further than 50 feet of your door if you want any hope of opening it.

Surface Interference

When you install a new keypad and find that it isn’t working, it could be due to interference with the surface on which the keypad is mounted. If you are using metal material, this could be your problem.

Remove the keypad from the mount and try the pin, if it works now, you can bet you’ve got a classic case of surface interference.

Keypad Needs Replacing

No matter how you slice it, sometimes keypads just break. You have to remember when these keypads spend hours each day in the sun, wind, rain, snow, and ice – it’s going to take a toll on the device.

Fortunately, you can pick up a new one relatively inexpensively to replace your garage door keypad.
